Macy’s Hot Picks from Fashion Star!

4 Apr

As most of you know, Fashion Star is a reality television series on NBC, which focuses on fashion design and is hosted by model Elle Macpherson.

The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week.

Last night’s brand new challenge for the aspiring designers was:

Can they create clothes for both the high end and the mass market?

As John Varvatos says about last night’s show,  ”It’s about how do we do a garment that we can sell at the top level and then also do its little sister that still is exciting and has a consumer breadth to it as well that they can buy at an opening price point. It makes the designers think about everything from the fit to the styling to the fabric choices to the colors. It’s a whole process. It goes well beyond just being creative at that point of time.”

Structured dresses, colorful maxis, and tuxedo jackets were all items that were purchased by the buyers!

This week’s HOT PICKS by Macys:

Barbara got $50,000 from Macy’s for her dresses!

Caprice was very impressed with her evolution as a designer and chose both of her dresses!

Here is a better look at what was considered the “High End” dress:

Sleeveless Printed Halter Shirtdress by Barbara Bates
With an abstract print inspired by city streets and a refined yet relaxed look, this updated shirtdress by Barbara Bates is a smart choice for desk-to-dinner wear.
$99

Here is the back:

Here is what was considered the lower end dress:

Sleeveless Hooded Halter Dress by Barbara Bates
Casual and formal worlds collide in this innovative ponte-knit dress designed by Barbara Bates. Perfect for a night out, it combines the relaxed feel of a sweatshirt with the tailored look of a party dress. $79

Here is a look at the back of the dress:

Caprice was very impressed with her evolution as a designer and chose both of her dresses! What do you think? Although week 4 is not my favorite pieces, I do like the lower end dress because it is really original and I like that you can dress it up or down. It is really a fun piece!  I also really like the back of both pieces – very sassy!  It will be interesting to see how well these pieces sell for Macys!

A little more on Barbara:

DESIGNER
BARBARA BATES
hometown: chicago, illinois · began her career over her lunch break, selling designs in the ladies’ room at work ·
designed for whitney houston & michael jordan

We are on the 4th week. This week we say goodbye to…… Lisa.

Jessica and Nicole loved her yellow car coat, but it wasn’t enough to keep Lisa on the show.

Lisa Hunter joins Nicholas Bowes, Oscar Fierro, & Lizzie Parker as contestants who have all been eliminated so far.

It is so fun to see the contestants expand as designers! The high end and low end was certainly an interesting theme and I could see how challenging that must be as a designer to really figure out how to make that work! Next week we are down to the final 10! However, they will be working in teams. Should be interesting!! Will you tune in? (Lucky for you that you have me and you don’t really need to!! haha!)
